Dental Lumineers – Polishing Smiles

A smile is the defining feature of a beautiful face and everyone deserves to have a beautiful one. Gone are the days when we had to live with what we had blaming fate and a whole lot of other issues for the plight of your teeth. The last few decades have witnessed a huge developmental transformation and so has the field of dentistry.
A life altering and popular technique in restorative dentistry, dental lumineers are widely known for their ability to efficiently mask decayed or discoloured teeth. Also called smile shapers, the lumineers are as thin as contact lens in appearance and they resemble natural teeth in colour and texture.

Dental lumineers
are attached to the front of the teeth that is discoloured or decayed. This usually does not require any restructuring to be done on the teeth. The bonded material is then sculpted to resemble natural teeth. These materials are made of durable porcelain material. Hence they are long lasting.

Advantages of dental lumineers
Dental lumineers are growing popular in cosmetic dentistry mainly because of the following benefits: -
  • Resistant to staining
Dental lumineers are made of materials such as porcelain which are inherently resistant to staining, due to their glass like structure. This prevents further discolouration of teeth due to staining from beverages or food items.
  • Corrects tooth imperfections and defects
Crooked and structurally defective teeth can be restored or made to look better with the help of dental lumineers. Slight chips and irregularities on the teeth surface can also be corrected with these.
  • Cover up old fillings and discolorations
Dental lumineers are used as an ideal solution to cover up old fillings that are discoloured. Stains due to fluorides, tetracycline or irregularities that occur due to physical trauma and root canal treatments can be covered up with them.

A bright white tooth helps individuals to enhance their personality, look healthier, and gives an effective impression on others.                   Bleaching is a technique that uses certain products to whiten teeth more than their natural color. These products have certain active ingredients such as hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide.

Dental bleaching is used when teeth are discolored or lost their permanent color. Basically, tooth crown is developed from two mineralized layers.  The first layer is enamel, which is white, porcelain-like, heavily mineralized external layer. The second inner layer is dentin, which is yellowish, less mineralized, auxiliary layer. By the time, generally enamel breaks down and forms many micro fractures in the outer layer. Eventually, these micro fractures forms debris, strains, pigmentation, and showing the yellow dentin auxiliary layer. The staining process further increase by the use of certain food products such as coffee, red wine, curry and habits such as teeth grinding, smoking and taking medicines.
Dental bleaching treatments reduce existing strains and give bright whiting teeth. Create The Perfect Smile

It is said that smile is the most beautiful curve that set many issues straight. And to sweeten that curve man has crafted techniques in the name Cosmetic Dentistry. Veneering is an important smile correction and enhancement technique employed in this branch of dentistry. It is done by placing ultra-thin shells in front of the teeth which is to be corrected. This ultra-thin material used here is made of porcelain.

Porcelain veneers, also known as dental veneers or dental porcelain laminates, are reliable wafer thin materials. They are tooth coloured and thus cannot be differentiated from original tooth and are custom made according to the shape and size of the patient's teeth. The veneers are attached to the front surface of the teeth effectively morphing it's size, shape and colour.

Veneers are usually made from resins and porcelain. The advantage of porcelain over resin is that they resist stains more effectively than their resin counterpart. Although resin veneers are cheaper than porcelain, the ability of the latter to reflect light in the same manner as natural teeth increases it's popularity. The porcelain veneers are more gum friendly as the gum tissues are more tolerable to porcelain veneers than resins. They also do not require extensive shaping and are much stronger.

Porcelain veneers are used to fix worn down, discoloured, uneven, misaligned and chipped broken teeth. They help in fixing gaps in teeth as well these veneers do not work well with decayed teeth. They generally last for about 7 to 15 years. The only disadvantage of Porcelain Veneer is that, once broken it is ir-repairable.

With a vast clientele of international and domestic patients, Dentique Dental Clinic, Calicut, Kerala, offers quality treatment in aesthetic dentistry under the expertise of Dr.Hiba Ali. The hospital also provides paediatric, aesthetic and orthodontic treatment at an affordable cost.

Flap Surgery for Gum Correction

Flap Surgery is required for severe gum diseases (periodontitis) if it cannot be cured with antibiotics or root planing and scaling. A flap procedure cleans the roots of a tooth and repairs bone damage caused by gum diseases. A gum specialist or an oral surgeon often performs the procedure. A local anesthetic will be given to you to numb the area where the doctor will work on your gums. The doctor will pull a section of your gums to clean the roots of your teeth and repair damaged bones. The gum flap will be sewn back into place and covered with gauze to stop the bleeding.

The flap procedure is necessary when severe gum disease (periodontitis) has damaged the bones that support your teeth.

Effects Of The Surgery
The bones will be smoothened and reshaped so that plaque has fewer places to grow. The bones will be repaired (grafted) with bones from another part of the body or with man-made materials. The doctor may place a lining on the bone graft to help the bone grow back. The lining may need to be removed later.
It takes a few days only to recover from a flap surgery provided you follow the instructions given. Do not hesitate to call the dentist of the surgeon if you have questions. Following are suggestions to help speed recovery:
  •  Prescribed painkillers to be taken.
  •  To reduce swelling and relieve pain, you can rinse your mouth gently with warm salt water several times a day after 24 hours.
  •  Change gauze pads before they become soaked with blood.
  •  Strenuous physical activity may increase bleeding so relax for a while after the surgery.
  •  Eat soft foods such as gelatin, pudding, or light soup. Gradually add solid foods to your diet as the area heals.
  •  Prop up your head with pillows. Do not lie flat as this may prolong bleeding.
  •  Brush your teeth and tongue carefully.
  •  Apply an ice or cold pack to the outside of your mouth to help relieve pain and swelling.
A few days after the procedure, your dentist will remove the stitches.
